Jim has operated as an independent music promoter in the North East since the mid eighties. He has promoted gigs and events that have ranged from 50 capacity pub gigs, 2,000 capacity venues, to 10,000 capacity dance events in arenas and 30,000 capacity festival.


His all round ability also saw him build Shindig, the Newcastle club night into an internationally recognised brand over his 12 year involvement.


Over the last 14 years Jim has concentrated his promoting efforts on outdoor events and he is Festival Director of the successful Evolution festival in Newcastle Gateshead which saw a peek bank holiday weekend attendance of 50,000 people over the 2 days of the event. More recently Jim has been instrumental in establishing new brands such as the Northern Lights dance festival. Jim also offers consultancy services on outdoor events for a number of clients.


Jim is also CEO of Generator, the UK’s leading Music Development Agency. This agency seeks to build and strengthen regional music business and identify career paths for, and develop the commercial viability of artists from across the UK through the highly respected Tipping Point programme. Generator is also the organisation that published the music industry round up blog aptly titled the Gen


Jim was a member of the DCMS sponsored Live Music Forum and chaired the sub group, which made recommendations to ministers on how the Live Music sector could be developed. Jim is also a member of the External Reference group that guides the PRSF and Arts Council England on how the Momentum fund should be run and also sits on the BPI / UKTI Music Export Growth Scheme board.


He was recently appointed as the Chair of the Association of Independent Festivals.
