The Flaming Lips, where to start? Cosmically inspired psychedelic rock is the closest you can get with four words. The Flaming Lips are one of the most thrilling bands in the world, they never fail to excite.
You have to go back to 1983 to discover the beginnings of this band. Fronted by the enigmatic Wayne Coyne, the Lips released four studio albums and saw numerous line-up changes before being picked up by Warner Bros. Records in 1990.
It wasn’t long before their next studio album ‘Transmissions from the Satelite Heart’ was taking them to the forefront, fuelled by their classic single, ‘She Don’t Use Jelly’.
Fast forward to the tail end of the 20th Century, a lot had changed for The Flaming Lips, years of experimentation accumulated in breakthrough with their 1999 album ‘The Soft Bulletin’. Embracing different sounds and instrumentation, the Lips embarked on a upwards trajectory from then on, achieving commercial success and a rise to prominence, notably with the iconic single ‘The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song’.
Which brings us to now, 16 studio albums, the latest a track-for-track tribute to ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’, and an unbelievable live show that has ranked them as one of Q Magazine’s ’50 Bands to See Before You Die’.
Liverpool will have never seen such a spectacle as to when The Flaming Lips land at Sound City 2015.
